Harefield Hospital Respiratory Team is seeking a fixed term (6 months, 10 PA) Locum Consultant to join their dynamic, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking team.
Harefield Hospital (HH) is a regional centre for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, and an international centre for adult heart and heart-lung transplantation. It is among the UK’s few cardiac centres involved in developing implantable mechanical ventricular assist devices for end-stage heart failure. The hospital provides primary intervention services for acute coronary syndromes to selected Trusts and the London Ambulance Service in outer West London and the Home Counties. It has approximately 1,185 staff, 180 beds, 5 operating theatres, and 4 catheter laboratories.

This position is funded by GSTT and offers an excellent opportunity to join a first-class team delivering innovative outpatient services, including sleep/ventilation, COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung disease.
Main duties of the job
To provide clinical services—including urgent inpatient, outpatient, and day case assessments—for patients referred to Harefield Hospital’s Respiratory Department. The department focuses on ambulatory respiratory services and is expanding rapidly. It offers general respiratory outpatient services, full respiratory physiology facilities, and manages over 6,000 patients with sleep and ventilatory disorders. The department also runs the UK’s largest combined hospital and community pulmonary rehabilitation programme, provides comprehensive home oxygen assessment and review services, and offers specialist outpatient services such as interventional bronchoscopy, EBUS, advanced COPD work-up, difficult asthma, food allergy, occupational asthma, and pre-operative assessments. It collaborates closely with Thoracic Surgery (four surgeons), Lung Transplantation, and Lung Cancer Radiofrequency Ablation services. Future plans include expanding services to include a multidisciplinary allergy service, a comprehensive medical-surgical pleural service, a specialized respiratory diagnostic service, and a direct access breathlessness service.

Person Specification
Qualifications/Training (Essential)
- Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise
- On GMC Specialist Register in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine or within six months of eligibility
- MRCP or equivalent
Clinical Experience (Essential)
- Broad management experience of respiratory conditions
Desirable qualifications and experience include:
- Sleep/NIV, TB, ILD experience
- Interpretation of respiratory investigations such as polysomnography or actigraphy
- Experience in oncology and ICU settings
Clinical Skills / Knowledge and Abilities (Essential)
- Audit skills
- Effective MDT working and communication skills
Desirable skills include teaching and service development experience.
