Applications are invited for a 10 PA Locum Consultant position in Gastroenterology and General Medicine at Whittington Health. This locum post is to cover a staff member on long-term leave and to address the growing demand in gastroenterology services.
We are a thriving department with increasing outpatient and endoscopy referrals. Our goal is to provide a first-class gastroenterology service in North London and meet government targets. We conduct regular audits to ensure high-quality service delivery.
The department operates a four-room unit opened in 2007 in the Day Treatment Centre, with 40 lists per week, including dedicated upper GI and colonoscopy lists. Recent approval allows us to utilize the fourth endoscopy room to meet expanding demand, working closely with neighboring organizations. We are also a JAG-accredited site.
The department is a core service within the Medical Division, treating approximately 4,000 new outpatients annually, along with 500 inpatients and over 8,500 endoscopies per year.
The appointee will report to the Chief Executive and Medical Director and is expected to work within GMC’s “Good Medical Practice” guidelines.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be fully accredited in general medicine and gastroenterology, enthusiastic, and willing to complement existing team skills. A commitment to patient care, outpatient system improvements, and teaching is essential. ERCP skills are not required. The candidate will participate in teaching, audits, and department management.
The job plan comprises 10 programmed activities, with no GIM on-call or acute medicine commitment. A rotating ward month involves ward rounds three times weekly, with adjustments to other duties accordingly. Administrative support and facilities are provided. The timetable is indicative and may be subject to change after discussion with the successful candidate.

The appointee will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, including acting as an examiner. Responsibilities include patient care, departmental administration, maintaining professional development, and participating in appraisals and job planning.
They will oversee junior staff, including rotas and development, and participate in departmental governance, audits, and research activities. Opportunities for research and honorary academic titles are available, with expectations to support undergraduate teaching and research.

Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR, or European Rights, with CCT within 6 months of interview
Desirable criteria

- Experience and commitment to teaching
