The Arcadis UK Environmental Planning Discipline is a mature part of the wider Environmental and Sustainability / Resilience business and is seen as a key part of growth opportunities across the Global Business Areas.

We require a Senior Technical Director with a strong track record of leading the environmental and consenting aspects of complex major projects, with particular focus on the Defence and/or Nuclear sectors. Our projects span all consenting regimes, sectors, and all phases of the project life cycle from needs case development through to construction. The successful candidate will have proven experience of delivering successful consenting strategies, producing robust and high-quality EIAs, and driving excellent collaboration with design teams to ensure project success.

The role of the Strategic Growth Director will be to develop, lead, and support growth into key sectors across Environment and Sustainability, focusing on (but not limited to) Nuclear and/or Defence, working collaboratively with the wider Arcadis. The Strategic Growth Director reports directly to the Environmental Planning Business Director.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Developing, deploying, and supporting the execution of a market strategy/business plan for the UK Environmental Discipline, in collaboration with Global Arcadis Solution & Sector Leads.
  2. Setting annual budgets and identifying investment opportunities aligned with the market strategy.
  3. Collaborating with existing Sector Leads within and beyond the UK Environment Discipline.
  4. Developing and maintaining a pipeline of opportunities linked to the Market Strategy.
  5. Acting as Pursuit Director for strategic opportunities.
  6. Supporting project delivery as Project Director for key client accounts and frameworks.
  7. Building and maintaining relationships with key clients, overseeing Key Client Management activities, and setting client targets.
  8. Monitoring trends and developing them into commercially viable propositions.
  9. Maintaining excellent senior-level relationships with clients and contributing to Key Client Management plans.
  10. Leading activities to achieve strategic and commercial targets, sourcing skills from appropriate teams.
  11. Leading Go/No Go discussions to obtain buy-in for pursuing opportunities.
  12. Representing Arcadis at sector and client events to enhance profile and develop wider service awareness.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of the UK Planning system and consenting process, with understanding of environmental and sustainability principles.
  • Experience delivering projects across multiple consenting regimes including DCOs, TWA Orders, Town and Country Planning Act, Hybrid Bills, etc.
  • Experience across sectors and project stages from strategic options to construction.
  • Leadership experience in multidisciplinary teams and technical capability growth.
  • Experience with planning inquiries or examinations, including expert witness roles (desirable).
  • Experience developing and marketing value propositions.
  • Senior-level experience working with diverse stakeholders and building client relationships.
  • Ability to foster innovation and a growth mindset culture.
  • Project management and technical skills in multidisciplinary project leadership.
  • Consulting and negotiation experience with authorities and regulators.
  • Commercial skills including forecasting, project management, and quality assurance.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent, with chartered status.
  • Flexible, pragmatic, and collaborative work approach.
  • Desired: Full Member of IEMA/IES/CEnv/RTPI.
